Home sweet home!

Life in "Villa Luz" is different from life on Earth's surface. For energy inside the cave, Louise says "Instead of plants you have bacteria." These bacteria make a lot of food for little critters that are right at home in the "Villa Luz". Midges (worms) and larvae eat the bacteria. Fish and spiders eat the midges. All these creatures build up a complex food web inside the cave that doesn't use energy from the sun like we do.

Look at all those fish! Notice how they are reddish in color but you can see right through them.
These tiny midges are walking on acid that would burn you or me!
This spider makes his home in the acidic walls of the cave and has a steady diet of midge.
Look at all the eggs on that beetle! Can you see the fish hiding in the water?

The SLIME team explorers also found crickets, crayfish, and bats in the "Villa Luz." Louise even saw an opossum strolling through the cave!

The SLIME team discovers something new and different in every cave. They are exploring places that are out of this world. Discoveries like these allow us to wonder about the endless possibilities of existence on our own planet and in outer space.

If you want to be an explorer like these scientists, continue onward!
